Frequently Asked Questions

The GUMBO project presents educational institutions with an easy to implement curriculum for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) charging stations installations, operations, and maintenance. With the rapid adoption of electric vehicles across the country, EVSE chargers are installed daily. This program presents local educators with a system to train a local workforce and have support throughout the process. The program will provide:

    1. Curriculum white papers: adaptable curriculums for installation training and maintenance/operation training.
    2. Access to support: a peer to peer network to connect educators with experienced individuals in the education, workforce, and EVSE fields.

Yes, the curriculum covers common charger types including Level 2 chargers and DC Fast Chargers (aka Level 3).

No, the program will do a high level view of how to connect these systems, however installing and utilizing solar and/or battery storage systems are not the focus of this program as they are not part of the chargers themselves.

The curriculum can be adapted for either system as well as be used as an add-on for a pre-existing electrician course.

The system can be “stacked” meaning that each training program for non credit can be done in a 3 week course and can be added together for a more complete program.

Any accredited community college or workforce‐focused educational institution in the U.S. may apply to deliver the GUMBO curriculum. Students from underserved, disadvantaged, or marginalized communities—regardless of prior experience—are encouraged to enroll.

Institutions can express interest by completing our online partnership form (link) or contacting their local Clean Cities coalition coordinator. Once approved, they will receive access credentials for the full curriculum, instructor guides, and onboarding webinars.

No. The entire GUMBO replication toolkit—including curriculum white papers, instructor materials, and access to peer support—is provided free of charge under the DOE Vehicle Technologies Program.

At minimum, institutions need access to at least one Level 2 charging station, basic hand tools, and a computer lab for the online theory modules. Optional modules may reference battery‐storage and solar integration but do not require full systems onsite.

Yes. Instructors gain entry to our peer‐to‐peer network of experienced EVSE professionals, live “train‐the‐trainer” webinars, and an on-call support line staffed by Clean Cities coalition experts.
